Linford Christie Sports Centre
New sand-filled sports facilities
Blakedown Sport & Play were contracted to build the extensive sports provision at the Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre in London under the Barclays Spaces for Sports initiative and in partnership with Chelsea FC, the Football Foundation, and Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
The £790,000 facility comprised a new full-size sand-filled (astroturf) sports pitch and four 5-a-side mini-football pitches. All five pitches were completed with perimeter fencing and floodlighting.
Client: Hammersmith and Fulham Council
Build Time: 25 weeks
The opening ceremony for the facility was attended by Chelsea FC players John Terry and Shaun Wright-Phillips, England Rugby World Cup winner Will Greenwood, the Group Chief Executive of Barclays Bank Bob Diamond, and Peter Kenyon, the Chief Executive of Chelsea FC.
Peter Kenyon remarked on the project, "the Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre project is a great example of how clubs like Chelsea, sponsors, football bodies and the local council can come together as partners to benefit the community. Chelsea is totally committed to promoting sport and fitness and this new pitch will provide a much needed multi-sports facility for the area."
