As part of the 200 acre Greenwich Peninsula regeneration, developer Knight Dragon, after a full tender process, appointed Blakedown Sport & Play to carry out the design and build of their new golf driving range complex.

The multi-million pound project occupies 300 yards of frontage along the River Thames and houses 60 individual bays over 2 tiers. Hitting out to a 230 yard fairway, laid with nearly 20,000m2 of synthetic grass, the range features raised greens, markers, and flags set to varying distances. Rattan sofas and tables are positioned in each bay, offering guests a table service from the bar and restaurant all in the setting of spectacular views of Canary Wharf, the Thames and the O2 Arena.

Blakedown Sport & Play were responsible for the complete turn-key development including all appropriate design works, coordinating with the client’s teams and liaising with the final tenants for the overall site: N1 Golf, the restaurant company Vinotec Compass, and the retail outlet A1 Golf. The fit-out for the restaurant and retail units was also undertaken within Blakedown’s contract.

The site, when handed over to Blakedown was a mixture of derelict buildings, spoil mounds, a lorry park and industrial waste land. Earthworks and site clearance involved completely re-profiling the site to create plateaus for the outfield and building elements. In addition to this, a section of the “Thames Path” had to be repositioned, with the permission of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Blakedown completed the project on time, to the set date of the 26 June. The following day the facility opened with:

  • A floodlit, 60 bay, 2 tier carpeted driving range with synthetic grass outfield.

  • A fully functioning 70 seat restaurant and wine shop with both external ground floor and roof top terraces.

  • A golf retail unit with changing room and fitting bays.

  • Landlord areas including reception, toilet facilities, offices, plant room and circulation areas.

  • Floodlit and CCTV covered car park for 50 cars.
