Water-Based Pitches

There are three main types of synthetic 2G sports carpets, often known as ‘astroturf’:

  • Sand-filled
  • Sand-dressed
  • Water-based

The water-based artificial turf system is the top specification surface for hockey and is used for International and Olympic competition. The sports turf uses a denser pile than other surface types which, combined with the water layer, provides the truest ball roll of any artificial turf system. It is a high density carpet which does not need any silica sand or infill material.

The surface requires an integrated irrigation system and water cannons or sprinklers to apply the water “infill” layer. The application of water helps to improve the slip resisting properties of the surface, provides some shock absorption to protect knees and ankles, and lubricates the pitch to allow the fastest hockey of any synthetic surface.

Water-Based pitches are the elite hockey surface and the highest specification recognised by the FIH.

This surface meets FIH Category 1 or 2.

Choosing a Water-based Surface

A water-based synthetic system is the premier choice for professional hockey clubs and tournaments worldwide and water-based systems can be accredited with FIH Global certification. The sports turf, when well irrigated, guarantees top ball speed plus superb durability. Water-based surface products have low slide resistance with very low water requirement and enhanced performance and grip.

FIH Quality Categorisation

Category 1 – Global Elite

Non-filled water based surfaces that are primarily used for FIH World Level International Competitions.

Category 2 – Global

Non-filled water-based surfaces that are primarily used for lower level international and top level national competitions.

Category 3 – National

Normally sand dressed or sand filled surfaces designed primarily for hockey. This category of surface is normally used for lower level national, regional and club play.

Category 4 – Multi-Sport

Surfaces designed for a number of sports and on which basic community and development level hockey can be played.
