What is a Polymeric?

The composition of a polymeric sports surface is essentially granules of rubber held together by a binding agent of polyurethane and sprayed with a high-traction, coloured top-coat. This composite is laid onto a solid base, principally tarmac, and retained by kerbing.

The most common application of polymeric surfacing in sport is for athletics running tracks, but it is also popular for tennis, netball and basketball courts, multi-use games areas, and indoor sports floors. As with most synthetic sports surfaces, the polymeric system is available in a range of specifications to meet different performance standards.

Choosing a Polymeric Surface

For athletics tracks, the main choice of surfaces are between porous, sandwich, and solid: the difference being in performance specification, lifespan, and cost.

Entry Level – Porous

A porous polymeric track is designed to allow water to drain through the surface. This is a cost-efficient solution, designed for high-traffic, low level competition and training, making it popular with schools and athletics clubs.

High Level – Sandwich

Effectively sitting between the porous and solid tracks, the sandwich system is more durable than the porous, increasing the longevity, but less expensive than solid tracks. The high-quality finish makes it ideal for International Athletics.

Elite – Solid

‘Solid’ tracks offer a harder more resilient surface and are used for the highest level of international competition. It is a costly option compared to other systems but as the surface is more hard-wearing, and requires less maintenance.

For multi-use games areas, a polymeric surface is suitable for netball, football, basketball, tennis, badminton, volleyball, athletics and sprint training, and as a general recreation area. Pre-designated MUGA types ‘Type 3′ and Type 4’ are specified for netball and football on polymeric respectively.

With polymeric surfaces being porous, slip-resistant & endlessly customisable, makes it ideal for Schools, Sporting Clubs & Collages where there is a high demand for usage all year through.
