Maesteg Welfare Park

Blakedown Sport & Play completed the redevelopment of the existing multi-use games area (MUGA) at Maesteg Welfare Park, delivered in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council. The project formed part of the Sport Wales Court Collaboration Fund, supported by the Welsh Government, which aims to transform existing tennis courts into inclusive, high-quality multi-sport facilities across Wales.

The Maesteg Welfare Park project involved the full renovation of the MUGA to create a modern, versatile, and durable space for community sport. Works included the installation of improved drainage systems to enhance surface longevity and playability, followed by a new surface course overlay to level and modernise the existing court area. A multi-colour acrylic coating was applied to provide a vibrant finish, complete with professional line markings for both basketball and netball. As part of the wider programme, Blakedown also delivered a companion project involving the rebuild of a single MUGA at Caedu Park. This scheme followed earlier works by Blakedown on the LTA framework, where the team resurfaced adjacent tennis courts within Maesteg Welfare Park.

The completed MUGA now offers a bright, durable, and inclusive sports space that supports both structured activity and informal community recreation. It enhances year-round usability and surface performance while providing increased opportunities for netball and basketball participation. The facility encourages local engagement in physical activity and strengthens the provision of accessible sports infrastructure in the Bridgend area.

The new MUGA has been warmly received by the local community, with an opening day event showcasing the positive impact of the redevelopment. The revitalised space now serves as a welcoming and accessible hub for residents of all ages to enjoy active recreation.
