Sports Facilities Construction

Client: Shrewsbury School

Contract Value: £1.5m

Contract Duration: 20 weeks

Blakedown Sport and Play undertook the role of principal contractor for a project that involved the construction of a new full-size FIH sand-dressed hockey pitch, a full-size 3G pitch for football, and a newly constructed tarmac MUGA for tennis and netball.

The construction process began with the removal of the carpet and shock pad from an old hockey pitch. The old tarmac base was then dismantled on-site and repurposed as the new subbase for the two new pitches.

Taking advantage of the open space created by the old pitch, groundworks commenced to establish supporting walls, a stone subbase, along with the installation of kerbs around the perimeter of both new pitches. A pristine tarmac layer was subsequently completed to facilitate the initiation of pitch installation.

An in-situ shock pad layer was installed on both pitches, followed by TigerTurf’s Evo Pro sand-dressed surface on the hockey pitch, featuring sand infill and multiple School Crest/logos. The 3G football pitch was surfaced with TigerTurf’s Premier Pro Elite 50 elite-level dual-yarn 3G carpet, complemented by sand and SBR performance infill.

The MUGA construction encompassed excavation, the installation of a drainage system, stone subbase, and kerbs, topped with a double tarmac layer and various sports markings.

Associated works within the project included the installation of brand-new twin-bar fencing around all pitches, a car park construction with lines, and the incorporation of soft landscaping elements.
