Risca Leisure Centre

Blakedown Sport & Play completed the redevelopment of the existing sand-dressed pitch at Risca Leisure Centre, transforming it into a state-of-the-art 3G rugby and football facility. Delivered in partnership with Caerphilly County Borough Council, the project represents a significant investment in the region’s commitment to providing high-quality, all-weather sports facilities for the local community.

The scheme involved the full reconstruction of the previous sand-based pitch into a new World Rugby and FIFA Quality-compliant 3G facility. The works began with the removal of the existing sand-dressed system and careful preparation of a new base. This was followed by the installation of a comprehensive drainage system, kerb edging, and an engineered tarmac layer. A Trocellen shock pad was then fitted, topped with a Desso IQ3 60mm 3G surface with SBR infill, ensuring optimal safety, resilience, and playability. Additional improvements included new perimeter fencing and a modern floodlighting system to enhance safety and extend available playing hours. The project was completed with external landscaping and access enhancements, providing a polished and fully integrated upgrade to the leisure centre’s outdoor sports offering.

The new 3G surface now delivers a high-performance, all-weather environment suitable for both rugby and football. The facility provides consistent year-round playability, improved durability, and elevated performance standards, while also broadening access for local schools, sports clubs, and community groups.

The redevelopment of Risca Leisure Centre has resulted in a modern, inclusive community sports hub that supports participation and athletic development across the Caerphilly area. Already being used by local schools and clubs, the new facility is inspiring the next generation of players and reinforcing the role of community sport as a cornerstone of life in South Wales.
