Tudor Grange Leisure Centre

Blakedown Sport and Play were awarded a contract to resurface an existing all-weather pitch at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Birmingham.

Construction began with the lifting and removal of the old carpet and shock pad, at which point it was identified that the current dynamic base had been installed with a small aggregate that didn’t meet the industry standard of 5% CRB. The result was that the sub-base didn’t have the structure required to support the installation of a new engineered base.

Blakedown Sport and Play worked with Graham to find a cost-effective and efficient solution, which was to remove the old aggregate and replace it with a new 200mm layer of aggregate installed onto a geogrid. Following this variation, a Macadam layer was able to be installed, ensuring the futureproofing of the facility.

A preformed shock pad was then installed with a Lano Master Max 50mm 3G system to meet FIFA Quality standards.

The surface was installed with sand and cork infill, which is a new biodegradable infill to substitute SBR. The purpose of this substitution is to limit environmental damage from the spread of SBR into the ecosystem, while retaining the performance of the surface for the participants.

Additional works included full 4.5-meter-high security fencing and gate replacement, smart gates, contamination grids, and tarmac-surfaced footpaths.
